Brene Brown: The power of vulnerability

“Brene Brown studies human connection — our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk at TEDxHouston, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A talk to share.”

I love TED-talks, and watch several of them per week. This one hits close to home.

This makes a lot of sense – some of my happiest and greatest moments happened because I let myself take a chance that made me vulnerable. Entering the European Championship for instance. Or kissing the boy I had a huge crush on. I felt insecure and there were no guarantuees – yet I ended up with a bronze medal and a wonderful boyfriend. Of course all attempts can’t be successful, but you never win if you never try.

You have a bronze medal? Wow! May I ask in what? And you are right – you can never win if you do never try.

In karate – competition sparring/kumite. I feel a bit stupid mentioning it front of others, I don’t want to seem like a selfcentered person, but I thought it was a good example of vulnerability leading to a great sense of achievement.

(Btw, I was a bit inaccurate in the first comment – it was the Junior European Championships. The European Championships for seniors holds a much higher level since you are not divided into age divisions.)

Wow, that is so incredibly cool! And mentioning good things you have done in your life have nothing to do with self-centered, no? At least I don’t think so.

I loved this, I might have to repost it at some point. Can you recommend any other good TED-talks? I have been to the website a few times but am always overwhelmed because I don’t really know what I’m looking for. 😉

I loved her talk as well, it really hit home with me, I was sobbing and nodding my head and thinking that she is a damn cool woman. I have this huge bookmarked library of TED-talks, everything from information about female orgasms (that sounds far kinkier than what the talk actually was – it was scientific and cool) to savants to hoarding. I will try to post my favorite TED-talks to my blog here when I have time to sort through my bookmarks, one of these days. I think my favorite TED-conference was the one about happiness – basically tons of talks about happiness – why people are happy, how to get happy, what keeps people from being happy etc. I think that all of these talks are on youtube as well.
